SPRING ISSUE 2016:
WHEN LINE SPEAKS VOLUMES – PART ONE
It has been said that there are no lines in nature. But there are lines in ‘art’. Only the human intellect can ‘make’ a line because it’s an invention, a concept. In this article we will explore ways of using line to create the third-dimension. This skill will give us a deeper understanding of how the human figure is constructed. Even though many of the examples presented here are independent of light and shadow, we will see how using a linear language to create volume will strengthen our ability to understand value.
This article will be presented in two installments. The first will focus on line. The second will show how linear construction impacts modeling with light and dark value.
